Chan Man-hung: US wants to win over China because of midterm elections; trade war still has uncertainties ahead

Chan Man-hung, director of the Belt and Road Research Institute at Chu Hai College of Higher Education, said on Now News TV's programme Straight Talk that the high-level reception given by the US to President Xi Jinping, who ended his visit to the US last month, was aimed at winning over China ahead of the midterm elections and reversing a slump in approval ratings. He expects the US to maintain trade with China until its decoupling plan is completed, with the trade war in a temporary truce, but Trump could impose tariffs at any time, and uncertainties still lie ahead.
