Financial Secretary's Deputy Michael Wong and Development Secretary Bernadette Linn Announce Reform of Building Maintenance Regulatory Regime

Deputy Financial Secretary and Acting Secretary for Housing Michael Wong and Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn held a press conference on 30 October to announce the reform of the building maintenance regulatory regime and support services. The Development Bureau will establish a Building Maintenance Support and Service Office, amend the Buildings Ordinance to upgrade major building maintenance into a new class of works, and restructure the Buildings Department. The Housing Bureau will replace the Independent Checking Unit with a Public Housing Building Control Unit, expected to be completed within next month.
The press conference explained the three tasks of reforming building maintenance regulation, including establishing a new support and service office, amending the Buildings Ordinance and restructuring the Buildings Department, and set out fees and a timetable.
