Fake Police Lure Students to Hong Kong to Buy Luxury Watches to 'Prove Innocence'

Police arrested 5 people, including 4 syndicate members and 1 watch shop employee, on suspicion of using fake police tactics to trick overseas students into coming to Hong Kong to buy luxury watches to 'prove their innocence'. They were charged with conspiracy to defraud and appeared in Kowloon City Magistrates' Court today. The fraud syndicate targeted mainland students studying overseas, claiming they were involved in a money laundering case and asking them to come to Hong Kong to hand over a 'deposit' and buy luxury watches to resell for cash. The female victim lost about $1.34 million.
