Golden Week retail and dining promotions pay off as merchants report bumper trade surpassing last year

In the first 4 days of the National Day Golden Week, more than 939,000 mainland visitors came to Hong Kong, up nearly 7% year on year. About 2,000 restaurants offered dining discounts, and merchants reported business better than last year. Legislative Council member Leung Chun-ying said some restaurants had 40 to 50 people queuing outside, a sight rarely seen in recent years; Shiu Ka-fai said merchants' orders had risen by 10% to 20%, while a dried seafood shop reported business up 30%.
