Hong Kong Spirit Award: educator who uses culture to break death taboos shortlisted

Lau Yui-yip, head of the student affairs section at the School of Professional and Continuing Education of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, has been shortlisted in the culture category of this year's Hong Kong Spirit Award. He takes students to visit cemeteries, funeral parlours and heritage exhibitions, believing that some aspects of Hong Kong culture are best understood outside the classroom, and his years of research cover funeral customs and the little-known Hakka animal dances.
