China nominates Song Li to run for WHO director-general; if elected she would be the second Chinese person

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced at the regular press conference that China has nominated Song Li to run for director-general of the World Health Organization, succeeding Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, whose term expires next year. Song, 52, has served as director of the Department of Maternal and Child Health of the National Health Commission, and has been a secretary of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation since October 2023. The WHO is expected to announce the list of candidates after the Regional Committee meetings conclude in early November.
