John Lee Sets Out Accountability and Legislative Amendments in Response to Tai Po Wang Fuk Court Fire Independent Committee Report

Chief Executive John Lee held a press conference with multiple directors of bureaux and heads of departments to set out follow-up work on the independent committee report into the Tai Po Wang Fuk Court fire. Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho offered her resignation to take political responsibility, and the government has reported to the central authorities under the Basic Law a proposal to remove her from office. The government will amend six ordinances, namely the Buildings Ordinance, the Building Management Ordinance, the Fire Services Ordinance, the Competition Ordinance, the Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance and the Independent Commission Against Corruption Ordinance, and aims to submit them to the Legislative Council within the year. The Civil Service Bureau's Public Service Commission will also investigate shortcomings in four departments.
The press conference set out accountability arrangements following the Wang Fuk Court fire independent committee report, including the resignation of the Secretary for Housing, amendments to six ordinances and the scope of the civil service investigation.
