Health Bureau Plans to Table Medical Devices Bill Next Year; Orthokeratology Contact Lenses and Urine Test Strips Among Those Requiring Registration

The Health Bureau has submitted a paper to the Legislative Council, seeking to table the Medical Devices Bill next year to replace the current voluntary administrative regime. The bill classifies devices by risk level; hypodermic needles, orthokeratology contact lenses and urine test strips, among others, must be registered with the Department of Health before being put on the market, and local manufacturers, importers and wholesalers must also obtain licences. The legislative proposals will be discussed at the Legislative Council Panel on Health Services next Friday.
