大埔火災報告公開 推行全面改革
The government has released the report of the independent committee on the Tai Po Wang Fuk Court fire. Chief Executive John Lee said the government would implement comprehensive reforms based on the report, including legislation to ban bid-rigging in building maintenance works and reform of the regulatory regime. The fire killed 168 people and affected 1,984 households. Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho offered her resignation, which takes effect immediately, and Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong will concurrently serve as acting Secretary. The report makes 120 recommendations, and the government has also launched a two-tier administrative accountability investigation mechanism under the departmental heads' accountability system.
The report sets out the fire's casualty figures, gaps in the regulatory regime and 120 recommendations, and lists the reform directions and accountability arrangements the government will pursue.
