Tai Po Fire: Former Senior Official Cheung Bing-leung Urges Government to Publish Building Structural Inspection Report to Allay Acquisition Doubts

Former Hong Kong Secretary for Transport and Housing Cheung Bing-leung, writing in Ming Pao, urged the government to publish the structural inspection report on Wang Fuk Court as soon as possible to allay the doubts of owners refusing acquisition. As of mid-October, more than 93 per cent of owners had signed formal sale and purchase agreements to sell their flats to the government; Cheung said compulsory acquisition by special legislation could conflict with the Basic Law's protection of private property rights and would easily trigger judicial review.
