The department will check lost-pet records and will prosecute the owner if there is evidence; if the owner cannot be found, the dog will be transferred to a partner animal welfare organisation for neutering and adoption arrangements once confirmed to be healthy and docile. The department reminded members of the public that if they encounter unattended dogs, they should stay calm, keep their distance, and call 1823 to report.
