New Huanggang Control Point automated channels open for enrolment

The rebuilt Huanggang Control Point is expected to come into service in the fourth quarter. Eligible Hong Kong residents can, with immediate effect, enrol to use the "co-verification" automated channels through the Immigration Department's "Hong Kong e-Channel" mobile application. The new control point will have 134 "co-verification" automated channels and 68 traditional manual counters. After enrolling, travellers need only queue once and present their travel document once to complete the immigration clearance procedures for both Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Eligible persons aged 14 or above can also enrol for the "face clearance" service at the same time when they register.

Testing of imported Japanese seafood products

From noon on 5 October to noon on 6 October, the Centre for Food Safety tested 122 samples of "aquatic products and their products, seaweed and sea salt" imported from Japan, and none exceeded the radiation levels; the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department tested 50 samples of local fishery products over the same period, all of which were also satisfactory. Since 24 August 2023, cumulatively, the two departments have tested 265,336 samples of food imported from Japan and 56,608 samples of local fishery products, all of which were satisfactory. The Commissioner for Food and Environmental Hygiene has issued a Food Safety Order prohibiting the import into Hong Kong of aquatic products, sea salt and seaweed food originating from 10 prefectures in Japan.

Centre for Health Protection calls for response to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, healthy lifestyle and risk-based screening to help prevent or cure breast cancer

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health calls on women to respond to Breast Cancer Awareness Month by adopting a healthy lifestyle and undergoing risk-based screening. Over the past 10 years, the overall five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer reached 84%, rising to as high as 99.3% for stage one. As at the end of June 2026, about 1,360 high-risk women had received screening under the phase two pilot programme, of whom 17 were diagnosed with breast cancer, all at stage one or below.

John Lee: $10 million reserved each year to fund hometown associations' activities and strengthen understanding of hometowns

John Lee said the government would continue to reserve $10 million each year under the Hometown Culture Promotion Programme to fund activities organised by hometown associations, particularly to strengthen young people's sense of understanding and belonging to their hometowns. Since the launch of the Hometown Culture Promotion Programme, hometown associations have applied to organise more than 100 activities, covering areas such as promoting hometown culture, uniting fellow townsmen in Hong Kong and exchanges with the mainland. He also mentioned that in June this year he led a HKSAR Government delegation to visit Fujian, and the two sides established key cooperation areas including finance, aviation, shipping and logistics, and innovation and technology.

Eddie Yue on recent HK dollar trends and the conditions for triggering the weak-side convertibility undertaking

Hong Kong Monetary Authority Chief Executive Eddie Yue said the HK dollar has gradually weakened since mid-June to hover around 7.8460 to 7.8475, close to the 7.8500 weak-side convertibility undertaking, mainly because the widening Hong Kong-US interest rate gap has prompted carry trades and demand for HK dollars related to the stock market has fallen back. He said the automatic interest rate adjustment mechanism of the Linked Exchange Rate System will keep the HK dollar stable between 7.75 and 7.85 to 1 US dollar, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority will closely monitor market conditions.

John Lee said that upon receiving the report, he would push forward comprehensive reforms and pursue accountability as soon as possible within a short period, and would make a detailed announcement then. He said the Development Bureau would submit proposals to amend the Buildings Ordinance within this year to strengthen regulation, enforcement and penalties; the government also told Legco that the iAM Smart platform could be explored for handling owners' corporation authorisations, and iAM Smart currently has 4.8 million registered users.
