Bank of Alakun receives banking licence from Hong Kong Monetary Authority, becoming first Central Asian bank to establish presence in Asia-Pacific

InvestHK announced that Bank of Alakun has received a banking licence from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and will establish a restricted licence bank in Hong Kong under the name Bank of Alakun Hong Kong Branch, becoming the first Central Asian bank to set up a business presence in Asia-Pacific. The department had provided consultation on licence applications and support for regulatory alignment. Director-General Alpha Lau said this is another milestone following the Chief Executive's visit to Central Asia in June this year.

Advisory Council on the Environment fully supports Hong Kong's First Five-Year Plan and pledges to continue advancing the city's green transition

The Advisory Council on the Environment unanimously supported on 5 October the Hong Kong's First Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) and the environmental protection strategies and measures in the Policy Address. Four of the plan's five binding indicators are related to the environment, including carbon intensity, the share of zero-carbon energy, the average concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and the quality of surface water across the territory. Chairman Prof. Christine Choi said the Council would continue to provide the government with professional advice on environmental issues to help advance the green transition.

Centre for Food Safety tests 427 samples of imported Japanese aquatic products, no excessive radiation found

The Commissioner for Food and Food and Environmental Hygiene issued a Food Safety Order, banning the import into Hong Kong of aquatic products, sea salt and seaweed foods originating from 10 prefectures including Tokyo and Fukushima. From noon on October 2 to noon on October 5, the Centre for Food Safety tested 427 samples related to Japanese imports and found no excessive radiation, while all 150 samples of local fishery products from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department also passed. Since August 24, 2023, a cumulative total of 265,118 imported food samples and 56,558 local fishery product samples have been tested, all of which passed.

Kai Tak Hospital begins phased opening with smooth first-day operations

Kai Tak Hospital began phased opening today, with the Comprehensive Family Medicine Centre the first to come into service, and the hospital described first-day operations as generally smooth. The centre will initially provide 350 consultation slots per day, and the hospital plans to add specialist outpatient services on the 26th of this month and move into internal medicine on the 12th of next month. There is currently no accident and emergency department in the hospital; patients may seek treatment at Queen Mary Hospital, Kwong Wah Hospital and United Christian Hospital.
