    HKU develops polarised vision system to handle spin, aiming for table tennis matches against humans

    A team from the School of Computing and Data Science at the University of Hong Kong has developed a "polarised vision" system that analyses the ball's spin rate and direction to enable robots to handle "spin" in table tennis, with the aim of playing against humans. Humanoid robot competitions follow international rules for one-on-one autonomous "robot versus robot" matches, while in professional players' matches the ball can reach speeds of 100 kilometres per hour and spin rates of 100 revolutions per second.

    Sitting on shopping mall railing, middle-aged man falls to his death

    A 47-year-old man surnamed Chiu was found lying in the driveway entrance and exit passage of Sun Hung Kai Centre car park in Wan Chai at around 10pm the previous night, and was certified dead after being rushed to hospital for treatment. It is understood that he smelled strongly of alcohol at the time, and is believed to have lost his footing while sitting on a first-floor railing, falling through the hollow space of a planter to the driveway about 6 metres below.

Shenzhen's Municipal Port Office said the old port handled about 50,000 passenger trips daily, while the new port can initially handle 100,000 to 200,000 passenger trips per day, with the long-term figure exceeding 300,000. Preparations for HKUST to build Hong Kong's third medical school are "everything on track"; over the past two years she has personally visited more than 30 medical schools on the mainland and overseas to learn from them.

    Hong Kong Cyclothon 32km riders unable to ride onto Ting Kau Bridge; Cycling Association apologises over lead vehicle misjudgement

    The Hong Kong Tourism Board's annual Cyclothon was held at the West Kowloon Cultural District for the first time today (the 11th), attracting more than 6,000 participants, with some competitors criticising the arrangements afterwards. Several riders in the 32km category said they were unable to ride onto Ting Kau Bridge as originally planned, while a large number of riders had to dismount and push their bikes near the finish line, with some describing the Cyclothon as having become a bike-pushing festival. Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China apologised for a misjudgement by the association's lead vehicle, which caused riders in the 32km category to miss the experience of the Ting Kau Bridge course and led to a brief blockage on a section of the route.

    The Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong has revealed that "CD8⁺ regulatory T cells" can serve as a novel therapeutic target against atherosclerosis. The team found that "effector CD8⁺ T cells" affect the normal functioning of vascular cells, accelerating the progression of atherosclerosis. The study further confirmed that inducing protective CD8⁺ Tregs with a non-cytolytic anti-CD8α antibody can restore Notch signalling in vascular cells, inhibit abnormal proliferation and slow the progression of the disease.

    警方荃灣警區特別職務隊昨日（10日）下午約4時在荃灣展開打擊毒品行動，在路德圍一住宅單位搜查一名40歲外籍女子住所，檢獲約14.44公斤懷疑甲基安非他明（冰毒）及電子磅、透明膠袋等包裝工具，總市值約636萬元。該女子涉嫌「販運危險藥物」被捕，現正被扣留調查。
