    Tai Yat Elevator Maintains Over 1,300 Lifts; Previously Fined $80,000 by EMSD for Inadequate Supervision

    Tai Yat Elevator (Hong Kong) Limited maintained over 1,300 lifts as of mid-year this year, and its website was suspended yesterday. According to the Gazette, the company was disciplined by the EMSD Disciplinary Tribunal in 2019 for failing to supervise engineering staff in maintaining the traction machine gearbox and failing to provide adequate instructions during lift maintenance at Hang Hing Building on Fuk Wa Street in Sham Shui Po in 2016. It was fined $80,000 and ordered to pay about $75,000 in inquiry costs and a total of about $57,000 to the Department of Justice and the EMSD.

    理工大學電機及電子工程系客座教授何永業指出，臺日電梯（香港）在翠屏北邨和博康邨更換升降機時未裝的耐火門門框組件，裝於𨋢門兩側，以「C」形鎖扣連接𨋢門與牆壁，猶如密實袋封口，雖屬耐火門小部分，但可阻止煙與火從門隙漏進𨋢箱。

    Chief Executive John Lee has accepted the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission to appoint Arnold, a former permanent judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, as an overseas non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal, subject to the consent of the Legislative Council.     The Fire Services Department said on 16 October that after analysing the timing, locations and weather conditions of hill fires in previous years, it identified 12 areas across Hong Kong with a higher risk of hill fires, including Yuen Long, Pat Heung and Sheung Shui. The department will join forces with the Civil Aid Service to form 12 patrol teams to patrol the relevant locations, and will work with other government departments and district organisations to promote fire safety messages at rural grave-sweeping sites.
